Want to read Yona of the Dawn after the anime? Start with the English single-volume edition of Volume 8 if you want a cautious handover with some familiar material. Volume 9 moves into the next stretch of the journey, while Volume 1 is the best starting point if you want to follow the manga from the beginning.
Edition information checked: October 21, 2026. Mild spoilers for the end of the TV anime; no later plot outcomes are revealed.
The tricky part is choosing the right book, not just finding a number. There is overlap near the TV ending, and VIZ now has a 3-in-1 edition alongside its original English volumes. This guide separates the reading starting point from the edition you buy, so that “Volume 8” does not send you to the wrong part of the story.
Yona of the Dawn After the Anime: Which Volume?
| Your priority | Suggested starting point | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Reconnect with the TV ending | Single-volume edition, Vol. 8 | Some overlap; a cautious transition into the manga. |
| Move toward the next journey | Single-volume edition, Vol. 9 | The group is assembled and the story moves onward; read Vol. 8 first if continuity matters to you. |
| Experience the manga from the beginning | Single Vol. 1 or 3-in-1 Vol. 1 | Start with Yona’s original opening, rather than skipping ahead. |
This is a reading recommendation, not a claim that every scene in the anime maps neatly to one chapter. The official TV story page places Zeno’s arrival and the gathering of all four dragons at the finale. VIZ’s descriptions for Volume 8 and Volume 9 bracket that transition: the search for the last dragon, then the assembled group’s onward journey.
That is why Volume 8 is the safer purchase when you are unsure. Some repetition is less disruptive than opening a book and wondering whether you missed a transition. If you prefer to discover Kusanagi’s pacing directly, beginning at Volume 1 also removes the need to match episodes to chapters.
Single Volumes or the New English 3-in-1 Edition?
VIZ lists Yona of the Dawn (3-in-1 Edition), Vol. 1 with an October 20, 2026 release date. It is an English paperback with ISBN 9781974769315. It begins at the start of the story; it is not a book that picks up after the TV finale.
The distinction matters when shopping: a 3-in-1 book’s volume number is not interchangeable with the original single-volume number. If you want the Volume 8 recommended above, choose the original single-volume edition. If you want to start over, compare the formats available to you and check the publisher’s listing before ordering.
| English paperback | ISBN-13 | Best fit here |
|---|---|---|
| Original Vol. 8 | 9781421587899 | A cautious anime-to-manga transition |
| Original Vol. 9 | 9781421587905 | The next stretch after that transition |
| 3-in-1 Edition, Vol. 1 | 9781974769315 | Beginning the manga from the start |
VIZ’s product pages link to retailers and, for the original volumes, show print and digital options. Choose the English edition and check availability in your country. This guide does not assume that a retailer ships everywhere, or that all formats are available in every region.
Should You Watch the OVAs Before Reading?
You do not need to watch a bonus animation before opening the manga. More importantly, a bonus episode is not automatically the next chapter after the TV ending. Hakusensha’s Japanese Volume 21 DVD-edition listing explicitly describes material about Zeno’s past. That is a reason to be careful if you have only just met him in the TV finale. The linked description contains spoilers.
My recommendation for a first read is to continue the manga first and leave backstory-focused extras until you are comfortable encountering later revelations. This is a spoiler-conscious reading preference, not an official watch-order rule. Also, a Japanese DVD-bundle listing does not confirm English subtitles or current legal streaming in your country.
Is the Whole Manga Available in English?
Not yet in the VIZ catalogue reviewed on October 21, 2026: it lists original English volumes through 46, with Volume 47 marked for pre-order. Japanese completion and English publication are separate milestones. Hakusensha lists the final Japanese volume, Volume 48, for October 20, 2026. That does not mean the English release finished on the same day. Check VIZ’s English catalogue for individual release dates before buying a set described as “complete.” The new 3-in-1 line also has its own release schedule.
A Simple Way to Choose Your Next Book
Choose original Volume 8 for a cautious handover from the anime, or Volume 1 for the full reading experience. Choose a 3-in-1 edition because you want that format, not because its number looks like the single volume you need. Keeping those two decisions separate makes the next step much easier.

For another perspective once you are comfortable with spoilers, read our Soo-won character essay on leadership and personal ties. It examines the tension between public responsibility and the relationships left behind. The linked essay discusses his past and motives; save it for later if you are just beginning the manga. This is an interpretive character essay, not a guide to where the anime ends.
