New to Chihayafuru? Where to Start: Manga, Anime, Movies, or the 2025 Drama

  • URLをコピーしました!

This series has a lot of doors you can walk through.

The manga. Three seasons of anime. A live-action trilogy. A sequel manga. And, starting in 2025, a brand new drama.

If you’re not sure where to begin, you’re not alone.

Here’s a spoiler-free breakdown of how everything fits together, and where to actually start.

Table of Contents

The Big Picture First

Chihayafuru basically splits into two separate “tracks.”

One is the anime.

The other is the live-action films.

Both are based on the same manga, but they’re separate productions, made independently of each other.

Watching the anime and then the films isn’t a continuation—it’s not “part two.”

Each one tells roughly the same stretch of story, with a completely different cast.

Starting With the Anime

The anime was produced by Madhouse, directed by Morio Asaka.

Season 1: October 2011 – March 2012

Season 2: January – June 2013

Season 3: October 2019 – March 2020 (24 episodes)

The voice cast for the three central characters stayed consistent across all three seasons.

Season 3 covers roughly volumes 18 through 27 of the manga.

Which means: the anime, on its own, doesn’t reach the ending.

As of 2026, there’s been no official announcement of a Season 4. There was already a six-year gap between Seasons 2 and 3, so a long wait wouldn’t be unprecedented.

If you’re starting fresh, Season 1 is the right place to begin.

It gives you a solid feel for the world, so that watching the films afterward becomes a fun comparison rather than a confusing repeat.

Starting With the Live-Action Films

The live-action trilogy came out in 2016 and 2018.

Titled Above the CloudsBelow the Clouds, and Musubi, starring Hirose Suzu.

Taichi is played by Nomura Shuhei. Arata is played by Mikenyu (Jr.).

Different cast from the anime, covering roughly the same section of the story.

You can start with either the anime or the films—it genuinely doesn’t matter which comes first.

Part of what makes this franchise fun is comparing the different casts and creative choices across versions.

If You Want the Actual Ending

Neither the anime nor the films take the story all the way to its conclusion.

If you want to know how the love triangle resolves, or how the Meijin and Queen matches end, you’ll need the manga.

The original manga runs 50 volumes, and it’s complete.

If you’ve just finished anime Season 3 and want to keep going, picking up at volume 28 puts you right where the anime left off.

If You Want to Know What Happens After

Even after the main manga ends, this world kept expanding.

The sequel manga, Chihayafuru plus Kimi ga Tame, follows a new protagonist at Mizusawa High School’s karuta club, after Chihaya and her friends have graduated.

And in 2025, a new drama, Chihayafuru: Meguri, aired—set ten years after the live-action film trilogy.

Several actors from the original films return, playing the same characters now grown up.

So if you want to follow one continuous cast across time, the order is: films, then Meguri.

The Short Version

Want the story spoiler-free and at a gentle pace? Start with anime Season 1.

Want to compare casts and adaptations? Watch both the anime and the films.

Want the actual ending? You’ll eventually need the manga.

And once you’ve caught up on everything—there’s still more waiting for you.

That’s a pretty good sign of how widely, and how long, this story has been loved.

Final Reflection

Having this many doors into a story usually means one thing: a lot of different people have loved it, in a lot of different ways.

People who fell for it through the anime.

People who fell for it through the films.

People who fell for it through the manga, page by page.

No matter which door you walk through, you end up in the same world.

I also share the small manga moments that stay with me long after reading—the pauses, glances, and choices that never fully leave.
