I first discovered Mai Nishikata’s work through the GAME series.
The way she draws intimacy between adults felt genuinely beautiful, and the high school romance storyline was just as striking — the kisses, the flushed expressions, all of it. She’s an artist whose work I’d describe, simply, as beautiful.
Last month, the newest chapter of GAME came out. After finishing it, I found myself wanting more of her work.
That’s how I ended up picking up Lip Smoke.
Going In With a Certain Expectation
Honestly, I had a specific expectation going into this one.
Since it was another Mai Nishikata title, coming from GAME, I assumed there would be intimate scenes between the leads as well.
I don’t dislike that kind of content. It can be enjoyable in its own right.
But lately, I’d been a little tired of stories that jump straight to a bedroom scene right after two characters meet — as if every romance needs to go there immediately.
With that mindset, I opened Lip Smoke.
A Story That Stays at “Just a Kiss” — And Nothing More
As I read further, the story took a different direction than I expected.
Lip Smoke, from beginning to end, never goes beyond a kiss.
At first, that surprised me a little.
But by the time I finished it, that surprise had turned into something closer to genuine appreciation.
Seta, a thirty-two-year-old erotic novelist, and Setsuna, a sixteen-year-old high school student.
How these two characters, with such a significant age gap, navigate their relationship — that’s where the story’s real strength lies.
It’s handled with a level of sincerity I wasn’t expecting.
Quiet Gratitude for the Fact That Seta Never Crossed That Line
As the story unfolds, Setsuna becomes increasingly drawn to Seta.
She makes several attempts to get closer to him, and each time, Seta deflects with calm, adult composure.
He’s aware of her feelings. He knows exactly what’s happening.
And because of that awareness — because he thinks about her future — he keeps a careful distance.
Seta never makes a move.
That alone was enough for me.
I’ll be honest: that single fact is what made me genuinely grateful for this character.
Not “An Adult Led by Instinct” — But a Real Adult
There’s no shortage of fiction featuring adult characters who, given the chance to date or get close to a teenage girl, let their instincts take over completely.
I’m not saying that’s inherently wrong. It’s simply one kind of story.
But that’s not what Lip Smoke chose to depict.
Seta is someone capable of thinking about a young girl’s future ahead of his own feelings — a genuinely responsible adult.
And the story portrays that without over-explaining it, without turning it into a lecture. It simply shows it, quietly.
For that, I found myself genuinely thankful.
A Story That Hit Harder Precisely Because It Stayed at “Just a Kiss”
I don’t dislike stories that include physical intimacy. That’s its own kind of enjoyable.
But finding a story like Lip Smoke — one that never goes beyond a kiss, and still manages to move me this much — was a different kind of experience for me.
There were no dramatic plot twists.
But the quiet tension between the two characters, and the weight behind each choice Seta makes, felt real.
I picked this up simply because it was by the same author as GAME.
I didn’t expect it to leave behind such a different, and unexpectedly deep, kind of impression.
Final Thoughts: A Bittersweet Read That Exceeded My Expectations
Lip Smoke moved me in a direction I hadn’t anticipated.
The age gap. The erotic novelist setting. The choice to stay at “just a kiss.”
All of these elements combined into something sincere, bittersweet, and genuinely memorable.
Picking up this book because of Mai Nishikata’s other work, and having it leave a far deeper impression than I expected — that’s my honest takeaway.
