A Beloved Completed Shoujo Manga Is Finally Being Animated
Created by Kyousuke Motomi, Dengeki Daisy ran in Betsucomi from 2007 to 2013. More than a decade after the manga ended, it is receiving its first TV anime adaptation.
That passage of time is part of what makes the announcement significant.
The story follows Teru Kurebayashi, a high school student left alone after the death of her older brother. Her emotional lifeline is a series of messages sent to the phone he gave her. They come from a mysterious person known only as DAISY.
After accidentally breaking a school window, Teru is forced to work for Tasuku Kurosaki, the rude and intimidating school custodian. Kurosaki orders her around and hides his concern behind harsh words, yet he also watches over her more carefully than she understands.
From the outside, the story can resemble a romance between a lonely girl and an older man who protects her. But that description leaves out much of what gives Dengeki Daisy its emotional weight.
The manga combines romance with suspense, loss, guilt, technological secrets, and the gradual construction of trust. Kurosaki’s protection is not presented as the uncomplicated strength of a man rescuing a helpless girl. His desire to protect Teru is inseparable from his own guilt and his belief that he may not deserve happiness.
Teru, meanwhile, does not remain a passive heroine. She receives support, but she also tries to protect the people she loves and insists on taking part in decisions about her own life.
For longtime readers, the adaptation is more than an exercise in nostalgia. It will bring an older shoujo work—with emotional conventions different from many currently serialized romances—to a new audience.

Fall in Love, You False Angels
A Modern Shoujo Romance About Beauty, Performance, and Hidden Selves
Coco Uzuki’s Fall in Love, You False Angels is an ongoing shoujo manga serialized in Kodansha’s Monthly Dessert.
Its heroine, Otogi Katsura, is admired throughout her school as a beautiful and perfectly composed girl. But the person everyone sees is also an ideal self she has carefully performed since childhood.
Her classmate Toki Ninomae seems equally flawless. He is handsome, calm, considerate, and apparently free of the contradictions Otogi hides. Except he is performing too.
After an unexpected incident exposes the sides they never intended anyone else to see, the two become keepers of each other’s secret. Their romance grows from the unsettling—and strangely liberating—experience of being seen by someone who understands that the public version of you is incomplete.
The manga’s appeal is not limited to the gap between cute appearances and more aggressive private personalities, although that gap moe is certainly part of its energy.
It also asks why both characters felt they needed their masks in the first place. Is the self that everyone loves still “you” if maintaining it leaves you exhausted? Studio Cabana
Music, One-Sided Love, and the Search for a Place to Belong
Created by Uma Agri, Studio Cabana is a shoujo manga about music, adolescence, and the painful distance between loving someone and being able to save them.
Yukari Maki is a serious high school student who cannot overlook behavior she thinks is wrong. That personality leads to her becoming the class messenger for Yusuke Kusaka, a boy avoided by their classmates because of his intimidating appearance and hostile attitude.
At school, Yusuke appears determined to keep everyone at a distance. After school, Yukari discovers him singing as the vocalist of a band at a music studio called Studio Cabana. Seeing this hidden part of him changes how she understands him—and gradually changes their relationship.
Because several characters carry unreturned feelings, the manga can look like a conventional love triangle from a distance. But its emotional structure is more complicated than a contest over who will end up with whom.
Studio Cabana examines the desire to be needed by someone you love. It asks when devotion becomes dependency, why people remain in relationships that damage their sense of worth, and whether love can help a person move forward when they do not yet believe they deserve a different future.
Yukari cannot resolve Yusuke’s pain simply by loving him more sincerely. She must confront the limits of what she can do for another person and decide what it means to support him without losing herself.

Rainy Day Serenade
A Josei Time-Slip Romance Set in Japan in 1907
Haruka Kawachi’s Rainy Day Serenade, known in Japanese as Namidaame to Serenade, should be distinguished from the three shoujo manga above.
It is a josei manga—a work published for an adult female readership—and its long-form approach to history, marriage, memory, and women’s choices reflects that distinction.
The story follows Hina Katagiri, a present-day high school student who is suddenly transported to Tokyo in 1907 during a rainy day.
There she meets Takaaki Hongo, a young man who believes she is his fiancée, Hinako Kitamine. When Hina encounters the real Hinako, she discovers that the two women look almost identical.
Their resemblance drives the mystery, but the manga never treats them as interchangeable. Hina and Hinako come from different times and possess separate memories, desires, and futures.
Hina and Takaaki share a connection that appears to cross time. Yet their love cannot be explained only by calling it fate. As time, memory, and social position alter their relationship, they must repeatedly learn who the other person is and decide whether to choose that person again.
The manga also examines the restrictions of its historical setting. In 1907, family status and marriage shape the futures available to its characters, particularly its women.
