If you finished the Given anime and want to continue with the manga, the right starting volume depends on how much of the anime you have watched.

Table of Contents

The Short Answer

What you watched Where to start in the manga
TV anime only (11 episodes) Start with Volume 4
TV anime + Given the Movie + OAD Given: On the Other Hand Start with Volume 6
Through Given: Hiiragi mix Start with Volume 8
Through Given: To the Sea The main story is complete through Volume 9; read Given 10th Mix next

This is a practical story-position guide based on comparing the official anime story descriptions with the English publisher’s summaries for each manga volume. It is not an official episode-to-chapter chart.

After the TV Anime: Start with Given Volume 4

The 11-episode TV series brings Mafuyu and Ritsuka through their first live performance and into the beginning of their relationship. It also leaves Haruki’s feelings for Akihiko—and Akihiko’s complicated connection with Ugetsu—unresolved.

That makes Given, Vol. 4 the clearest place to continue. SuBLime’s official description begins with the band preparing new songs and a music-festival tryout while the emotional focus shifts toward Haruki and Akihiko.

If you want a completely seamless transition, you can begin with Volume 3 instead. Its later material overlaps the end of the TV anime and helps bridge the story into the first movie. But readers who mainly want new events can go directly to Volume 4.

Purchase option: Check Given, Vol. 4 (English paperback) on Amazon.

After Given the Movie: Read the OAD Before Moving to Volume 6

The first movie focuses primarily on Haruki, Akihiko, and Ugetsu. Some Mafuyu-and-Ritsuka material from the same part of the manga was adapted separately in the OAD Given: On the Other Hand (Given: Uragawa no Sonzai).

For that reason, the cleanest route is:

  1. Watch Given the Movie.
  2. Watch the OAD Given: On the Other Hand.
  3. Continue with manga Volume 6.

Volumes 4 and 5 are still worth reading even if you watched both adaptations. A movie must compress and rearrange material, while the manga lets the relationships and quieter transitions unfold at their original pace.

Purchase option: Check Given, Vol. 6 (English paperback) on Amazon.

After Given: Hiiragi mix: Start with Volume 8

Hiiragi mix moves the focus toward Hiiragi, Shizusumi, and Ritsuka’s work with syh. The official English summaries for Volumes 6 and 7 cover this part of the story.

After the film, Volume 8 is the practical continuation point. It follows syh as the band approaches its debut and returns to Mafuyu’s hesitation about Given’s own future.

Starting with Volume 6 is the better choice if Hiiragi and Shizusumi are the characters you care about most. It gives their arc more room than a feature-length adaptation can.

Purchase option: Check Given, Vol. 8 (English paperback) on Amazon.

After Given: To the Sea: The Main Manga Is Complete

Given: To the Sea is the conclusion of the anime series. The official film site presents it as the completion of the animated story, and its events correspond to the final stretch of the nine-volume main manga.

So there is no unadapted “next arc” in Volume 10 of the original series. The main manga ends with Volume 9.

However, the story now has an epilogue continuation: Given 10th Mix, set ten years later. Read it after Volume 9 or after completing the full anime through To the Sea.

The English edition of Given 10th Mix is scheduled for November 10, 2026, from SuBLime. For edition details and legal purchase options, see my Given 10th Mix English release and reading-order guide.

Preorder option: Check Given 10th Mix (English paperback) on Amazon.

Should You Start the Given Manga from Volume 1?

If you already love the characters, yes—starting from Volume 1 is the best experience.

The anime tells the main story effectively, but the manga gives you:

  • more time inside small conversations and changes in expression;
  • transitions that screen adaptations may shorten;
  • bonus material and quieter character moments;
  • one consistent route through every relationship rather than material divided between TV episodes, movies, and an OAD.

If your priority is speed, use the starting points in the table. If your priority is character detail, begin with Volume 1.

Purchase option: Start Given from Volume 1 (English paperback) on Amazon.

Final Recommendation

For the fastest continuation:

  • TV only → Volume 4
  • First movie + OAD → Volume 6
  • Hiiragi mix → Volume 8
  • To the Sea → Given 10th Mix, after Volume 9

For the richest version of the story, start again with Volume 1. Given is built as much from pauses, changing expressions, and small acts of care as it is from major performances—and those details are exactly what make the manga worth reading even after the anime.

I also share the small manga moments that stay with me long after reading—the pauses, glances, and choices that never fully leave.
