What is a “Haikara-san”?

Do you know the Japanese term “Haikara-san”? It refers to stylish and modern women from the Meiji to Taisho periods who actively embraced Western fashion and culture. The combination of kimono and hakama (a traditional Japanese skirt-like garment) worn by female students was a symbol of the “Haikara-san style”! It’s a beautiful part of Japanese culture that feels both nostalgic and new.

My pet peeves!

This amigurumi captures the charm of such a “Haikara-san.”

✨ Let me show you the special details! ✨

  • Hand-Sewn Hakama: The hakama worn by the girl is meticulously hand-sewn, piece by piece. You can feel the delicate craftsmanship of traditional Japanese attire.
  • Realistic Hair: By attaching thin yarn strand by strand along the stitches, the hair achieves a natural look, almost like real hair.
  • Real Eyelashes: The doll’s expressive eyes feature real false eyelashes. Be sure to notice the charming details!
  • Custom-Made Leather Shoes: No compromises were made on the footwear either! She wears miniature leather shoes specially crafted by a leather goods artisan.
  • A Lucky Temari Ball: And in the girl’s hands is a colorful temari ball.

I gave the amigurumi a lucky charm!

In Japan, temari balls have long been considered auspicious decorations, symbolizing “harmony,” “family peace,” and “protection from evil.” We hope this small temari ball brings much happiness to everyone.

And guess what? You can see this Haikara-san style amigurumi in person in Kyoto!
